Description
During the 1996 election campaigns, President Museveni was given a grinding stone (olubengo in Luganda) thereby being endorsed as the most suitable candidate to lead Uganda's burdens. This took place at Nyenga Sub-County headquarters in Buikwe District.
The olubengo was a symbol of strength and perseverance, meant to project the image of a leader ready to bear the weight of national responsibility. The grinding stone became a unique part of the 1996 campaign.
The iconic moment was unplanned. During a campaign rally in Nyenga sub-county, a local leader named Sam Peter Kitaka presented Museveni with the olubengo. By accepting the gift and carrying it, Museveni embraced the symbol and integrated it into his campaign.
