At the end of 1958, Museveni passed an oral interview by Mr. Edward Cleaver the headteacher of Mbarara high school hence joining secondary education at the age of 14

He left his parents’ home to stay at school, marking his first time of staying away from home and their kraal permanently since then. Joining secondary school changed his environment in regards to subjects that were taught during his primary level.

Museveni excelled in Literature, History, Religious Studies and Geography, laying the foundation for his future leadership. He was later on informed how he had excelled and later on visited the school to confirm on the school notice bord where the results were displayed and was later admitted to Ntare school class of 1961.
