President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 26th September 2025 officially commissioned the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja District, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s journey towards industrialization and technological innovation.



Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) Vehicle manufacturing plant construction started in 2019 up to 2024 when all vehicle production systems were fully installed and manufacturing started in March 2025, its Uganda’s first established automotive manufacturing plant with an initial production, it has so far produced 37 electric vehicles and 27 Diesel coaches and has a production capacity of 2,500 vehicles in the medium term, 5,000 in the long term and 10,000 annual productions by 2030. It aims to promote local manufacturing thus contributing to Uganda’s goal of achieving middle-income status.



President Museveni applauded the project as a symbol of Uganda’s capability to produce locally made vehicles and a step toward economic self-reliance reminding Africans to regain their self-confidence, focus on mechanization, pointing out the example of the transformation of the dairy industry, a similar approach needed to produce lithium batteries and other products required for full economic integration. The commissioning of the Kiira Vehicle Plant reflects Uganda’s growing commitment to advancing science, technology, and sustainable industrialization for national transformation.
