In January 2007, President Museveni received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from a US institution for his efforts in HIV/AIDS awareness and education. This was awarded to him due to his transiparency in political leadership where many global leaders remained silent on the HIV/AIDS issue, Museveni spoke openly about the crisis in Uganda. He broke the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and put the epidemic at the forefront of the national agenda.
